ps2 not reading ps1 discs correctly

This is my european SCPH-30004 V4.
For the last year or so it has refused to read ps1-discs, but it would still read ps2-discs almost flawlessly.
So, because I couldn´t play any ps1 games, I went and bought a 40gb ps3. Sure it couldn´t read any ps2 games, but at least I could enjoy some of those classic ps1 games. Or so I thought...
It turns out that for some reason it can´t play FFVIII. Why, I couldn´t fathom, since you would think that all those squaresoft games would be popular enough to warrant a working emulation. I still haven´t checked all my other ps1 games, so I´m not sure what works or not.
A couple of days ago I stumbled upon a video from genickle1987, who apparently had a similar problem. His fix would be to put one of those blank cdroms at the top and bottom of most cd spindles.
Apparently his idea was that the cdroms for the playstation was to light for some reason.
When I tried it for the first time it didn´t work, so I continued to look around.
Well, today to disassemble my ps2 somewhat, and try to learn something from it. i can say it was fun learning to realign the disc sled... Anyway, I decided to try the bland cd-trick again, and it worked!
Sure, not every time, but most of the time is better then almost never.
Now, I realise this is not a permanent fix, and would like some oppinions of what could be wrong with this thing. I don´t think it is a good idea to play games with most of the ps2 disassembled like this, as most of the moving parts are exposed. I don´t think the cd will fly out and decapitate someone, like the cheesy eighties movie dark angel, but better safe than sound as they say.
So please leave any comments on what could be wrong with it, and how it should be fixed.
By the way, sorry about the lack of any voiceover but me having a bad cold, combined with my complete lack of knowing what to say until the camera has been put away, means that you just have to live without it.
