Mawi essentially has similar wind directions to Desert Point making it a prime surf spot during the dry season. Mawi picks up most swells. When headhigh and under, it has a short right breaking over a shallow reef. The left is the longer wave and can handle more swell. As the left breaks down the reef it get deeper. There are other surf spots nearby that favor rainy season winds.
For beginners and intermediate surfers, Mawi is best on mid to high tide. Highly skilled surfers can surf it on a low tide but the shallow reef bottom will make anyone making a mistake pay the price for it.
The road to Mawi quickly turns to dirt and has some rough sections. The drive is about 10 minutes long. A car or scooter can make the trip, just take it slowly. Expect to be charged a road fee on the way in but at this time, no additional charge for beach access.
A family cooks basic food and makes fresh drinks. I prefer the mango juice, which is not diluted like most places.
