I measure the base current
I measure the base current of 2 transistor, the 2N2222 and 2N3904, both NPN transistors.

Then I measure the current each transistor passes through the collector when connected directly to a power supply and controlled by that base current to get an estimate of the gain. I then use a multimeter that can measure hFE (same thing as gain) to verify my results.
