FROM DUSK TILL DAWN, directed by Agnieszka Ostrowska, CIR's programme director, tells the story of democratic changes in Central and Eastern Europe while presenting specific places or objects that were silent "witnesses" to the game-changing events. We will see the Bem Square in Budapest, where Hungarian students protested against the Soviet authorities in 1956, the remains of the Berlin Wall, ideologically dividing Berlin from 1961 to 1989, Gate 2 of the Gdańsk Shipyard, where Lech Wałęsa stood in 1980, announcing the creation of Trade Union "Solidarity", the John Lennon Wall in Prague, covered with anti-government graffiti during the times of Czechoslovakia, and finally the Baltic Chain from 1989, when almost 2 million citizens of the then three republics of the Soviet Union formed a tight cordon from Vilnius through Riga to Tallinn, demanding freedom. We will hear witnesses of those events, as well as young people who will comment on the history of the transformation of our region.
