Hello, guys. My name is Liberty and I spent years hiding in my boyfriend’s closet.
My life has really been a rollercoaster. My parents always fought mercilessly and I always felt like I was a burden. When I was 14, they decided that they couldn’t live together anymore—they barely could manage to breathe the same air. So they sat me down and told me that they were getting a divorce. Dad had already packed his bags. He patted me on the back and said, “see you soon.” Well, that “soon” never came. My mom was full of rage, disappointment, anger, and sadness. My dad became He-Who-Shall-Not-Be-Named in the house, so for a while… we just didn’t talk to each other at all.
There was one silver lining in all of this—Judah. As I was a bit of a wallflower in school and a ghost of a horrible past at home, I found one person that would have my back no matter what. He was 22 at the time. We met on the internet and then started hanging out each day after school. He was very protective of me and taught me how to love myself. We’d spend hours driving in his car, talking, laughing. He made me feel like I mattered, you know? I was deeply in love with him, but he still kept a bit of a distance from me, saying that he still wasn’t sure he wanted to take our friendship to the next level.
But the real tragedy started about three months into our friendship. That crucial day, my mom and I had a horrible fight. You see, we’d barely talked since my parents’ divorce. Then she sat there that morning, slurping her soup, and said, “Where are you spending your evenings? Spit it out.” I said, “None of your business. You didn’t want to be my mom, so why start now?” I opened Pandora’s Box. She started this incoherent monologue about my father being the devil, his “sinful” adventures, my disrespect towards her. I stood up and left for school... not knowing I wouldn’t see her for 4 years.
