There’s a commonly held belief in film discourse circles that blockbuster movies are inherently dumb or they somehow have less artistic merit because of their intended mass appeal. This is a notion I fundamentally disagree with. There is an artistry in large scale action sequences and an intelligence in selecting recognizable, universal images and symbols. One film which demonstrates this exceedingly well is Roland Emmerich’s 90s hit, Independence Day.
