The UK was left ill-prepared for the COVID-19 pandemic due to flawed planning and failures by ministers and scientific experts, a public inquiry revealed in a scathing report on Thursday.
The inquiry found that Britain recorded over 230,000 deaths by December 2023, with a death rate comparable to the US and Italy but higher than most of Western Europe.
Former Prime Minister Boris Johnson ordered the inquiry in May 2021. Its first damning report stated that better preparation could have reduced the financial and human toll.
