The Ensenada de Utria Natural
The Ensenada de Utria Natural National Park is located in the Choco region, on the Pacific Coast in Colombia between Nuqui and Bahia Solano. It is a large and protected area, which has many ecosystems. It makes a connection between the jungle, the beaches, the swamps and the Pacific Ocean.
Do you know the whales’ migration?
It is a quiet place and the best place for the whales to come and give birth. The whales migrate the months of June and September. They come from the South Pole and travelling 8.000 km each way. These whales usually jump out of the water, showing their fins and tails before hitting the water. It is one of nature’s most beautiful and exciting displays.
The importance of the mangrove ecosystem:
Utria Park offers the best environment for many species to give birth and contributes to the preservation of other economically important species, such as the fish which make up part of the sustainable food chain for many of the communities that live here, who also make a living from the proceeds of fishing. The mangrove ecosystem is an important part of the park. The fish come here to leave their eggs and raise their young. Here they spent a long time feeding because this place offers a lot of food and shelter. Later they move out to the open sea when they are juveniles or even larger. Black communities are located near to the coast. In the interior part of the rainforest are the indigenous communities. The area that contains the indigenous communities is humid tropical rainforest. In the case of Utria Park and especially Choco, there are some species which are in critical danger. The first strategy of the National park through ecotourism is to set an economic and educational goal in order to create a conscience in the local population and improve their quality of life. The goal is to develop all the processes present in the region: Work with the indigenous communities, educational institutions, NGOs and community leaders, in order to emphasise the conservation of our environment.
