Translating the sub song (片尾曲)
Translating the sub song (片尾曲) "Will Always Love You" (始终爱你) from the The Final Combat 1989 (蓋世豪俠) into English.
Original Cantonese Song by David Lui (呂方).
In 1986, TVB had a breakthrough in the "Blood Stained Intrigue" which starred mostly talent straight out of TVB's acting academy and were unknown at the time. Here they discovered that a good script and storyline can have success and that they didn't need to rely on top stars to attract interest in their shows. Hence the pay disputes and less reliance on an all star cast from the late 1980's to the early 1990's where the shows often starred actors and actresses who were previously in supporting roles. This worked to some degree and failed at other times.
The Final Combat 1989 is in the "success" pile. It was a funny wuxia comedy series that did not go over the top with comedy. It lightly made fun of known wuxia plot lines, known wuxia character stereotypes, and even trolled some of the well known wuxia stories if you paid enough attention. Woven into this is a good story line. The cast was also good and acted well. It is a must see series as it was that entertaining.
Until this series, all I knew about Stephen Chow (周星馳), is that he is a foot solider in The Legend of the Condor Heroes 1983. That he was one of the last people to have seen Barbara Yung prior to her death. It was Stephen's first wuxia lead role and he snatched the opportunity well as this series propelled his career to new heights. He would go on to have a long career. He also introduced his common catch phrase "Sit down, drink a cup of tea, eat a bun, and talk slowly" (坐低飲啖茶，食個包) in this series. In an interview he said he saw the "Terminator" and that Arnold Schwarzenegger had the line "I'll be back", so he wanted a line for himself in Asian cinema. He also did not think it would take off quite the way that it did. Kudos to him though for pulling it off.
Starring opposite Stephen Chow was Francis Ng (吳鎮宇). Up to this point, you can usually spot Francis in the background of most wuxia series in a cameo role with barely 90 seconds of screen time. On occasion, he'd land a supporting role of sorts. But this series also propelled him into stardom and his career took off after this series. In this series he starts off as a hero but soon turns into a bad guy. The complexity of his character allowed Francis Ng to demonstrate his versatile acting skills. I really enjoyed his performance. Rounding out the male cast was Richard Ng (吳孟達) who was one of the main villains in this series and the ever reliable veteran, Lau Kong (劉江).
The beautiful Yammie Nam (藍潔瑛) led the female cast. As a kid I didn't really like Yammie as she was heavily promoted by TVB ahead of other actresses like Sharon Tang. She was even named as one of the "Five Beauties of TVB" despite the lack of a body of work that justified such a title. For example, she never appeared in a Jin Yong or Gu Long series. Anyway, as an adult I appreciate her more and watch these series with neutral eyes. Having said that, she was good in this series without being great. The casting of Yammie, who was the best known actress at the time was to guarantee an audience for the series. She was suppported by Jacqueline Law (羅慧娟) who played a much more interesting character and probably stole the show. The pity for Jacqueline is that she was so good in this series, that TVB type casted her and attempted to put her in similar type roles every series she appeared in. I think this killed both her popularity and career. Other notable female cast members included Cutie Mui (楳小惠).
The sub song "Will Always Love You" is another fantastic song by David Lui. I really enjoyed translating this song and cutting a clip for it so enjoy...
