In 1962, then unknown record producer Phil Spector needed a group to record the Gene Pitney song “He’s a Rebel” in LA. As Spector’s group, The Crystals, were on the east coast at the time, he used a local group called The Blossoms made up of Darlene Love, Fanita James, and Gloria Jones, to record the song. It became a number 1 hit but Spector credited the song to The Crystals even though it was performed by Darlene Love and The Blossoms.  In 1963, Fanita and Darlene teamed up with Bobby Sheen to form Bob B. Sox and the Blue Jeans. Today their song, “Why Do Lovers Break Each Other’s Heart?”, is at #42 and will climb to its peak at #38 by the end of March. The Blossoms would go on to back up such artists as The Righteous Brothers, Elvis Presley, The Ronettes, and Sam Cooke (to name a few) and were also regular performers on “Shindig”.

Philadelphia regulars spotted dancing today: Mike Barone (2:20), Bobby Baritz (3:05), and Pat Carpino & Michelle Liebowitz (4:33)

I vote for Marvin Gaye for “Most Promising Male Vocalist”…..I hear good things about that kid :)

Coming Up Next: The kids dance to a song that explains the singer’s plot for revenge against his ex-girlfriend……and went all the way to #1.
