In the mid 20th century the United States and the Soviet Union found themselves in a space race. We examine the technical challenges that the engineers and scientists had to overcome as the two countries boldly tried to go to where no one had gone before. When Yuri Gagarin became the first human to journey into space wasn't just an incredible achievement for him, it was also an incredible achievement for the Soviet Union who successfully beat the United States in the race to space.
