Princess Leonor of Spain, Royal family meet with the winners of the 2022 princess of Asturias awards

Spain’s King Felipe and Queen Letizia, Prior to the Princess of Asturias Awards 2022 ceremony, received the winners of the "Medallas de Asturias 2022"; the winners of the "End of studies 2021" awards from the University of Oviedo; as well as the presidents of the Awards juries, the members of the Princess of Asturias Board of Trustees and the Princess of Asturias Foundation, and the 2022 Princess of Asturias Awards.
On Friday, King Felipe and Queen Letizia, accompanied by the Princess of Asturias, Princess Leonor and Infanta Doña Sofía, begin the day by receiving, at the Hotel Reconquista, the winners of the "Medallas de Asturias 2022"; the winners of the "End of Career 2021" awards from the University of Oviedo, and to the presidents of the Juries of the Princess of Asturias Awards, members of the Board of Trustees and patrons emeritus and, finally, to the winners of the "Princess of Asturias Awards 2022", to whom King Felipe will impose the insignia of the Foundation.
In the afternoon, the "Princess of Asturias Awards 2022" award ceremony will be held at the Campoamor Theater in Oviedo, which honor Carmen Linares and María Pagés, Princess of Asturias Award for the Arts; Adam Michnik, Princess of Asturias Award for Communication and Humanities; Eduardo Matos Moctezuma, Princess of Asturias Award for Social Sciences; to the Refugee Olympic Foundation and Team, Princess of Asturias Award for Sports; Juan Mayorga, Princess of Asturias Award for Literature; Ellen MacArthur, Princess of Asturias Award for International Cooperation; Geoffrey Hinton, Yann LeCun, Yoshua Bengio and Demis Hassabis, Princess of Asturias Award for Scientific and Technical Research; and Shigeru Ban, Princess of Asturias Award for Concord.
The Princess of Asturias Foundation is a non-profit private institution whose essential aims are to contribute to extolling and promoting those scientific, cultural and humanistic values that form part of the universal heritage of humanity and consolidate the existing links between the Principality of Asturias and the title traditionally held by the heirs to the Crown of Spain.
His Majesty King Felipe VI has been the Honorary President of the Foundation since its creation in 1980. Following his proclamation as King of Spain on 19th June 2014, Princess of Asturias, Princess Leonor is now the Honorary President of this institution which annually convenes the Princess of Asturias Awards.
Aimed at rewarding the scientific, technical, cultural, social and humanitarian work carried out at an international level by individuals, institutions or groups of individuals or institutions, they are granted in eight categories: the Arts, Literature, Social Sciences, Communication and Humanities, Technical and Scientific Research, International Cooperation, Concord and Sports.
The Awards are presented at a formal ceremony held each year at the Campoamor Theatre in Oviedo.
The Awards Ceremony is considered one of the most important cultural events on the international calendar. Throughout their history, the Awards have received recognition from a variety of sources, such as the UNESCO declaration in 2004 acknowledging their extraordinary contribution to the cultural heritage of humanity.
