The fine sandy dream beaches
The fine sandy dream beaches with their bizarre rock formations are the trademark of the Algarve. The southernmost of the Portuguese provinces also scores with an exciting hinterland and a pleasant climate. Andrea Grießmann travels the area between Olhao, the Cabo de São Vicente and the beaches on the west coast. Together with her guide Michael Dias, she visits the Igreja de Santo António in Lagos with its richly gilded altar, the old monastery in Monchique and the Forteleza de Sagres fortress at Cabo de Sao Vicente. She strolls through the farmers' market in Loulé, presents Sofia von Mentzingen's donkey project, goes bird watching in the Lagoa dos Salgados wetland with the German ornithologist Georg Schreier and hikes a bit along the old Via Algarviana pilgrimage route. She sails along the coast, learns to surf and tests what is said to be the last bratwurst before America at Europe's most south-western point.

Andrea Grießmann visits a mussel fisherman on the island of Culatra and discovers an almost deserted beach. Back on the coast, she throws herself into the waves of the Atlantic with her surfboard. The way inland leads past stork nests to Monte Foia, at 902 meters the highest mountain in the Algarve. Andrea Grießmann walks part of the 328 km long Via Algarviana, which stretches between the Spanish border and the Portuguese west coast.
