The UNESCO World Heritage site
The UNESCO World Heritage site of Aachen Cathedral is one of the oldest and most important cathedrals in all of Europe. Dating back to the 9th century, it was originally the private chapel of Charlemagne and also where he was buried upon his death in 814. For 600 years, it was the coronation place for German kings, queens and emperors, and in the 14th century a large extension in the Gothic style almost doubled the size of the cathedral. A fascinating building with great history, and one that I really enjoyed visiting.
