Description of the method of identifying causes of problems in engineering processes and projects, using the Ishikawa diagram with a simplified example using Miro's visual tool

An Ishikawa diagram is a visualization tool for categorizing the potential causes of a problem. Typically used for root cause analysis, an Ishikawa diagram combines the practice of brainstorming with a kind of mind map model. It must be efficient as a test case technique to determine cause and effect.
An Ishikawa diagram is useful in product development and problem-solving processes, typically used to focus a conversation around a problem. After the group has brainstormed all possible causes for a problem, the facilitator helps the group rank potential causes according to their level of importance and diagram a hierarchy. The name comes from the diagram drawing, which looks a lot like the skeleton of a fish. Ishikawa diagrams are typically worked from right to left, with each large "bone" of the fish branching out to include smaller bones, each containing more detail.

The Doctor. Kaoru Ishikawa, a Japanese quality control expert, is credited with inventing the fishbone diagram to help employees avoid solutions that only address the symptoms of a much larger problem. Ishikawa diagrams are considered one of the seven basic quality tools and are used in the "analyze" phase of the DMAIC (define, measure, analyze, improve, control) approach to Six Sigma problem solving.
Ishikawa diagrams are also called cause and effect diagrams, or fishbone diagrams.
