If your VW engine hood is stuck shut, watch this video for help opening the hood. I demonstrate the details of how the hood latch on a 2001 Jetta works. If the hood doesn't open, the first thing you should try is have one person hold the release handle open while sitting in the drivers seat, and have a second person lift up on the hood at the same time. If that works, just grease the mechanism and your problem is solved. The repair shown here is for more complicated problems.

An observant viewer will notice that (for practical reasons) I demonstrate how to open the hood while the hood is open. The position of the lever you press on to open the main latch when the hood is closed is in a similar position to that shown here.

If you need to remove the whole latch assembly after opening the hood, remove the three torx bolts at the front, slide out the little hood position sensor, slide the cable off it's mount, and pull the whole assembly up vertically.

The hood position sensor is a simple switch, closed when the hood is open and open when the hood is closed. If the sensor is malpositioned you will not get a confirmation honk from the car when you successfully lock all doors with the drivers key. If the position sensor fails you can remove the sensor and leave the wires unconnected to mimic an always closed hood.
