How to raise a baby hummingbird part 2 of 6

10 - 15% of a hummingbird diet consists of insect protein.  Here is a technique for getting baby hummingbirds to eat flightless fruitflies (available at PetCo and PetSmart).  Put a little honey on a toothpick, catch the flightless frutiflies.  If the chick will open its beak, you can gently direct feed (being very careful not to push into the crop).  The other way is to let them lick the honey and bugs off like a little anteater.  The first way is best as fewer of the bugs escape.

If you are just using sugar water hummingbird mix, you must supplement with insects.  If you purchase the Nektar Plus, it has protein in it already.
