Our August 2023 colloquium features Dr. Jonathan AC Brown who discusses his new book Islam and Blackness.

In his book, the bestselling scholar examines the claims that Islam is #antiblack. He explains the reasons why antiblackness arose in the #IslamicWorld world and got intertwined with normative tradition and delves into the imagery of “blackened faces” in the #Quran and the other instances in #Shariah where #Blackness was understood to be “undesirable.” The book presents an in-depth study of the controversial knot between Islam and Blackness and identifies authoritative voices in Islam’s past that are crucial for combatting antiblack racism today.
Brown states that “whether #antiblackness was incidental or accepted as social custom, however, leading voices of Muslim scholarship from medieval to modern times have rejected it and advocated vigorously for the Prophet’s teaching that no race or tribe has any inherent value over another.”

Joining us as discussants are:

Dr. James (Jimmy) Jones:
Executive VP of the Islamic Seminary of America and Professor Emeritus of World Religions and African Studies at Manhattanville College

Dr. Muhammad Khalifa:
Professor of educational administration and Executive Director for Urban Education Initiatives at the Ohio State University, author of top-selling book, Culturally Responsive School Leadership

The discussion and Q&A session is moderated by Dr. Usaama al-Azami, Departmental Lecturer in Contemporary Islamic Studies at the University of Oxford.
