Train of Lights 2023
Puffing Billy Railway

Hello all,
Welcome to a Victorian heritage train video. Today we are back at Victoria's premier heritage railway, Puffing Billy. This video is our second video covering this season's Train of Lights: our chase video; but unlike last year, this uses footage from two nights of the event due to time restrictions. The Train of Lights debuted last year with resounding success, selling out within the first few days. The train operates from Lakeside Station to Gembrook and returns. The locomotive is first transferred from Belgrave to Lakeside, where they rest and service the engine. The locomotive arrives late in the afternoon, then shunts the carriages into the platform. The bells for departure ring at 6PM, signalling the train’s quick descent into Wright Forest. Then, at one of the lowest points in the line, the crew works hard to ascend Cockatoo's Bank onto Fielder's Bank, the summit of the line.
At Gembrook, the locomotive is detached from the train and sits in the refuelling siding as passengers get some warm refreshments and light entertainment. The trip back is a little quicker, primarily going downhill, arriving back into Lakeside at 8:30PM.
The consist for the Train of Lights has locomotive NG129 at the helm, a former South African Railways NG/G16 Garratt locomotive, with 11 NBH type excursion carriages and two open wagons used as generator carriages. The train is decorated with lights all throughout the carriage's interior and exteriors.
In this video we begin with the transfer following from Monbulk Creek Trestle, then watch the sunlight fade for the return trip.
The main chase for the night was captured on the 2nd of July. The transfer and shots at Lakeside at the end were captured on the 8th of July.

The Puffing Billy Railway is Victoria’s most famous tourist railway. Located in the Dandenong Ranges, the railway is 15.6 miles (25.1 km) long, operating with their original locomotives from over 100 years ago. They operated regularly throughout the year, and also hold special events like the tour seen in this video. This is the annual season of the "Train of Lights", adding a rather spectacular spectacle for the railways of Victoria.
