There are more than 3 million cases of contact dermatitis in the US every year. “It’s a reaction of your skin you can develop a rash at a spot on your skin where it was exposed to something that triggered an allergic reaction.” While the rash can be itchy, Lee Health Allergist and Immunologist Dr. Laura Veras said scratching is a bad idea. “That can break down the skin and lead to complications like skin infections. If there’s a breakdown of the skin, bacteria can go in and cause an infection.”
It can be difficult to pinpoint a cause because the reaction lags behind the exposure. “It gets worse before it gets better, so even if you’re no longer exposed to that particular chemical again, it can persist for six weeks at a time,” said Dr. Veras.
The key to treatment is to figure out what started the rash. “Go back on your steps and see what was different today, did you use a new personal care product? Was there any change in your personal care routine? Even wearing a new piece of clothing?” You can also buy products made for sensitive skin. “They’re going to be more simple, and dyes and fragrances are known triggers for allergic contact dermatitis, and same with your detergent try to keep it simple,” said Dr. Veras.
If you remove the irritant, things should go back to normal, “It can take a while, but if you’re stop using it, give it some time it will go away if you’re not exposed to it.” An allergist can also do a patch test to figure out the cause. You can find more on allergies on Leehealh.org.
