直到F6F“地獄貓”戰鬥機的出現，才徹底改變了這一局面。與以往的美式戰鬥機不同，F6F可與“零式”在低空玩起“貓捉老鼠”的死亡遊戲。日軍開始由旗鼓相當到一路被碾壓，曾經的王者“零式”也被後來者居上的F6F戰鬥機壓制的擡不起頭來。
