I bought a set of 5 starter carving chisels by Narex, but I needed a way to sharpen them. http://www.narextools.cz/en/carving-s...

My boss has a set of homemade slipstones, wooden blocks with rounds on one side and grooves on the other, which he uses to hone the tools after initial sharpening on a diamond stone, so I had a look on the web for tools along these lines. I came across this SlipStrop on Axminster and decided to make one, with sections for each of my 5 chisels http://www.axminster.co.uk/flexcut-sl...

The video shows how I made it, but unfortunately I haven't found it that great. I know 'why' that is, but not exactly 'what' is wrong: the 'why' is because it's the first time I tried to do any curved work and I wasn't experience enough to get a good result. My boss suggested that it would have been easier to make them individually like his rather than in one block, which makes sense as you can plane the round top more easily, although I liked the idea of the block as it's only one thing to pick up and the chisels that it goes with are a finite set. Another reason it doesn't work that brilliantly is because the metal on the starter chisels isn't that great and they don't form a burr very well, instead a section of the metal just folds over.

So the project wasn't a great success, but the carving I made with the chisels (along with some other gouges I borrowed) worked out very satisfactorily, and that will be in the next video! (Next video now online here - Video 11: First carving project)

I would LOVE to hear your constructive comments on any aspect of this video - the idea, the creation process, the techniques, the presentation, etc.
