Robert Katscher (* 20 May 1894 in Vienna ; † 23 February 1942 in Los Angeles ) was an Austrian composer , songwriter and film composer . As the author of Viennese songs , dance music, hits and some operetta music, he was one of the most popular Austrian entertainment composers before 1938. His work “Wenn die Elisabeth nicht so schöne Beine hätt” (1930) achieved great international fame.

Robert Katscher received his doctorate in law and initially took over a law firm , but later studied at the Academy of Music and Performing Arts under Hans Gál to become a composer.

Katscher's comedy Die Wunder Bar with texts by Géza Herczeg and others was premiered in Vienna in 1930 with the subtitle A Game in Nightlife . A year later it was played on Broadway (The Wonder Bar) and was made into a film in America in 1934 (Wonder Bar), both times with Al Jolson in the leading role.

After the annexation of Austria in 1938, Katscher, as a Jew, had to emigrate to New York to escape the Nazi regime and was the first refugee to be accepted into the ASCAP rights management company .

Around 1940, Katscher moved to Hollywood , where he associated with Ernst Haeusserman and Ernst Deutsch . His few compositional contributions to films remained mostly undocumented. However, his piece " When Day Is Done ", performed by Paul Whiteman in 1927 , was still used in film soundtracks after his death.
