Here is a classic example of a valiant soldier, Lt Col Ruben Guinolbay then a captain assigned with the First Scout Ranger Regiment. He was figured in so many bloody encounters with the secessionist MILF and Abu Sayyaf in various parts of southern Philippines, and foremost of which is the battle in Lamitan Basilan against the terrorist group of Abu Sayyaf. He is from Ifagao, noted for extreme bravery and “oldel is oldel” (order is order).

Capt. Ruben Buyucan Guinolbay has been recommended for a Medal of Valor, the country's highest military honor. A battle tested officer who lead the 70 men Scout Rangers in defending the Town of Lamitan Basilan during the Abu Sayyaf Attack.

After graduating from the PMA Class 94' he completed his Scout Ranger Course and became the Top 1 of his Class later on Capt. Guinolbay was sent to Fort Benning USA to train in one of the best Airborne Rangers School and when he came back he became the Course Director of the SR Class 142 whom he had personally trained were killed in action and wounded during the 27-hour encounter without reinforcements., whose members made up the unit, that was waylaid by the Abu Sayyaf in Lamitan.

As an experienced combat officer who was awarded merits in successful missions in Jolo, Zamboanga, and Basilan Capt. Guinolbay never experienced any casualty in combat. Not until the Lamitan fierce siege. During the heavy battle 4 of his Rangers were killed and several were wounded due to the snipers of the Abu Sayyaf scattered throughout the Town. Guinolbay personally dragged many of his men to safety and ministered to the wounded. All 4 of his men died in his shoulder and 3 of them asked his permission to die and the last Ranger who was hit in the head was carried by Capt. Guinolbay and while putting back the spilling brains of the dead Ranger in his own pocket while he's shouting and giving instructions to his men to gain morale in combat. Capt. Guinolbay did not order his men to hold the line instead he ordered constant attack to the enemies while standing alone in the battle ground to show his men that the snipers and the mortars of the Abu Sayyaf will not hit him.

Capt. Guinolbay was recommended for the Medal Of Valor for displaying courage and leadership in defending the Lamitan Basilan Town and rescuing the Abu Sayyaf Hostages in Dos Palmas Palawan and Fr. Nacorda.

Capt. Guinolbay's statement while receiving the Gold Cross Medal and the Recommendation for the Medal Of Valor:

" HINDI NA IBA SAKIN YUNG MGA TAO KO, KAPAMILYA NA ANG TURING KO SA KANILA. MAGKAKASAMA NA KAMI SA HIRAP AT GINHAWA. ANG PINAKAMASAKIT SA LAHAT AY YUNG MAMATAY NA YUNG TAO MO TAPOS ANG UNANG TATAWAGAIN AY ANG OPISYAL NYA TAPOS SASABIHIN SAYO NA: SIR KAHIT ANONG MANGYARI PARATINGIN NYO ANG KATAWAN KO SA PAMILYA KO! "

Thank you for the Inquirer News! Pero matagal na yan 2001 yan nangyari pero the wounds and the faces of my men who was lost in Lamitan were still with me until now lalo na pag may nagreremind sa nangyari. To my men who fought that day SALAMAT kasi I will never got that Recommendation For Medal Of Valor kung wala kayo. 142 walang iwanan!
