Powered Amplifiers vs Mixer Amplifiers for Commercial Sound Systems on Pro Acoustics Tech Talk Ep 61

Is there a difference between a power amplifier and a mixer amplifier, and how do you know which type of amplifier you need for your commercial sound system?
On today’s Pro Acoustics Tech Talk, Nathan is talking all about power amplifiers, mixers, and mixer amplifiers. He will be defining each type as well as explaining the differences and how they each work.
Audio Power Amplifier
- An audio amplifier is an electronic amplifier that amplifies an input signal up to a high enough wattage to where it can drive speakers. This will take an audio signal and transform that into electrical wattage. That wattage will then drive the speaker to make the paper cone move to generate sound waves.
Audio Mixer
- An audio mixer is where you plug in lots of individual input sources so that you can control and adjust the actual audio signal. Some mixers are designed more for pro audio and some more for commercial audio, but the idea is they all allow you to adjust the audio signal and also match it to the appropriate output to drive an amplifier.
Mixer Amplifier
- A mixer amplifier combines the characteristics of a mixer and an amplifier. Mixer amps not only have amplifiers built-in but can also control multiple input sources. You can set the volumes as well as adjust bass and treble and things like that from your mixer amplifier. What's important here is not only does it allow for multiple input sources, but it makes sure that whatever device you're connecting is driving the amplifier with the appropriate signal you need to make sure you get the wattage required.
