2020 UPDATE: After I uploaded this video 11 years ago, I started to donate to Make A Wish Australia - not every year, but quite often. Then in 2019 I started to receive all sorts of letters from charities I'd never even heard of. I decided to write to one of them, asking where they'd got my name and address from. They kindly wrote back, telling me it was from Make A Wish Australia.

I then wrote to Make A Wish Australia explaining to them that their decision to share my personal private information with other charities, without my permission, has resulted in me deciding to direct my charity dollars to others who have better ethics in this regard. I asked them to remove me from their database and stop contacting me. They didn't, and they continue to pester me. Just thought everyone might like to know. OK, now onto the video...

This is the infamous sketch that was broadcast on ABC1's "The Chaser's War On Everything" on 3rd June 2009, which parodied the Make A Wish Foundation. It copped so much flack in the media (including from Prime Minister Kevin Rudd) that the ABC made an official apology the next day. When the programme's scheduled repeat went to air the following night on ABC2, this sketch had been expurgated. Then the ABC announced that the show wouldn't even go to air for the next 2 weeks.

In my opinion, the sketch was a wonderfully inspired, satirical way of delivering the message "donate to this worthy cause - if you don't, these kids will miss out on some of life's pleasures which you and I might take for granted, but which they only have a limited time to experience."

To all the people who have commented that the sketch was OK but that the punchline crossed the line: well, far from being intentionally cruel to the kids, this was their satirical way of making sure that we should understand: "Oh - just in case the satire went over your head and you thought that sketch was only meant to be funny - the awful truth is, these kids will actually die - so don't just laugh or complain - donate some money."

I can say that it worked for me, because I started donating to Make A Wish Australia as a result of seeing (and I'm not ashamed to say, laughing at) this sketch. I wonder how many of the 'morally outraged' people, who have been so vocal in criticising The Chaser, put their money where their mouth is and did the same?

Sure, I've stopped donating to them now, since as I mentioned above, eventually they abused my generosity and went and shared my personal details with other organisations without my permission.
