This video is part of the series I have made showing my students how to create a sculptural clay shoe. We will be using soft slabs and coils to create these dynamic sculptures. This video demonstrates the beginning of the cleaning process on the shoes after they have reached the leatherhard stage. If you have not yet seen the video on how to make the patterns for the shoes or the assembly of the shoes check these links here: Video 1 in series: Create the Patterns for the Shoes    • Creating a Shoe Pattern for Making a ...   Video 2 in series: Assembling the Clay Shoe from Patterns    • Assembling the Shoes in Clay from Pat...   Video 3 in series: Cleaning and refining the leatherhard shoe    • Making a Sculptural SHOE in Clay   Ph...   Video 4 in series: Detailing and Finishing the shoes    • Finishing the Sculptural SHOE in Clay...   Video 5 in series: 3 ways to finish the shoes using oxides and glazes    • Video   I have a playlist of all the videos I will be using for this project located here:    • Sculptural Clay Shoes- Ceramics I   To begin, the kids will take their patterns which were shrunk on the copier prior to this bell, and cut them apart with scissors. Then, they will roll out their clay into a slab for the base- standard is ⅜” (our yellow-coded sticks) or if thicker is desired, they will stand the sticks on edge to get closer to ⅝”. They will cut out the sole and set aside. The side patterns will be either cut from ⅜” thick slabs, or built from coiling techniques which are pinky thick- or again, ⅜” in thickness. Assembly should begin with the TOE BOX portion first- and a coil should be placed on the inside. If you would like to order one of the handmade tools we use for the toe portion, you can find them on my Etsy shop here: www.etsy.com/KaransPotsAndGlass/listing/972168720/… Each section is assembled with scoring, slipping, and blending on the interior. If a tongue is used, that is often stretched a bit wider, and then thinned, and inserted from behind. For the great tools I used in the video (including the mudtools shedders, ribs, and kemper mini ribbon tools) check out this link to a live Googledoc I continually update with lots of my favorite tools on Amazon using my associate links! (also some non-amazon suggestions on here!) docs.google.com/document/d/1XbYPQjjJnHrQG5xyWGMHZk… I am a public high school ceramics teacher at William Mason High School in Mason, Ohio. (Mason is currently the largest high school in Ohio!) As a potter, I have been working in clay for over 30 years, and I have been teaching for over 29 years, the past 20 + have been specifically teaching high school ceramics. I love what I do! I have my own studio in my home basement, where I work on my personal pottery for my Etsy site; www.etsy.com/shop/KaransPotsAndGlass I started my Youtube channel a few years ago, to make videos to help my students if they are absent and miss a demo, or if they would like to explore more advanced techniques independently. I have been amazed to reach such a wider audience than my own students! Please subscribe to my channel if you would like to receive channel updates, or would like to learn more about clay and studio processes!
