Virologist Richard Webby, PhD, of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital shares five things to know about the avian influenza virus, H5N1, detected earlier this year in the United States.
1. This is a virus first seen in Asia 25 years ago.
2. Sometime at the end of 2021, the virus flew over from Europe, landed in Canada and has now spread into the U.S.
3. This virus is extremely lethal for chickens and other bird species.
4. COVID-19 and H5N1 are RNA viruses, and we know that these evolve. Much like COVID-19 has changed from one variant to the next, we’re worried H5N1 will continue to change as it spreads in the U.S.
5. Most of the threat is to bird populations and not to humans. Our hope is that this is not going to change.
