Extracting Cannabis with Hydrocarbons

Description of Hydrocarbon Extraction Method
-Closed loop system, plant material is placed in extraction vessel and a cold hydrocarbon such as butane or propane is washed through the plant material.

-The waxes, fats, and lipids from the cannabis bind to the hydrocarbon, and the plant material is then removed

-The resulting mixture is then cold-boiled in a vacuum and the butane evaporates as butane and propane have very low boiling points

-The resulting extract is then collected.

Resulting Hydrocarbon Extraction End Product
Hydrocarbon extracts come in a variety of forms, textures, and consistencies (based on protocol used) which all are encompassed by the broad term Butane Hash Oil (BHO).

Examples end products are
Shatter
Badder
Crumble
Cannabinoid concentrates average between 80-90%

Advantages of Hydrocarbon Extraction
Preserves terpene and cannabinoid content very efficiently (compared to other methods)
There are a wide range of extract types that can be achieved through hydrocarbon extraction
Can be done with trim and flower.
Relatively low equipment and run costs

Disadvantages of Hydrocarbon Extraction
EXTREMELY DANGEROUS, butane and propane are highly flammable and extreme caution must be used when extracting with hydrocarbons.
Unwanted compounds could make it through the extraction process and would need to be later refined.
