With the release of the Mandalorian Season 3 episode 4, the Foundling, we finally got the answer to a question we’ve all been waiting for… Who rescued Grogu from the Jedi Temple. We now know the answer to that is Master Kelleran Beq. But did you know that he actually already exists in Star Wars canon and has a pretty long history… It gets pretty dark. In the final years of the Jedi Order, Kelleran Beq served as a Jedi Master who had an extremely important job… Before we get to that extremely important and sadly pretty dark job in the end, we have to talk about his journey to getting this job and rising to the rank of Jedi Master.
During his time as a Padawan, Beq befriended a witty and sarcastic protocol droid named AD-3. The two became close friends and the droid was actually very jealous of Kelleran Beq’s force powers throughout their time together. The droid even teased the young Jedi about using his force powers to close doors and lift rooks.
Now during this time as a Padawan, Beq soon gathered his kyber crystal from Ilum and was shocked to learn that his force affinity was purple. This means that he straddled the line between the darkness and the light side, never falling to the dark however. Using this crystal, Beq then crafted his very own purple lightsaber.
During his padawan training, many Jedi Masters noticed that Beq was immensely skilled with his lightsaber. So much so that he gained the nickname “The Sabered Hand”.
Soon after he began serving on the Starship Athylia, and quickly rose to the rank of Jedi Master some time later. Now this is wherer things get dark. In the Canon childrens TV show, Kelleran Beq serves as the Jedi Master in charge of overseeing the trials of young Padawans, and ensuring they are fit to proceed to the next rank…These trials went on for a long time, but because of the time period they took place in, pretty much every single one of the padawans he oversaw, would have been slaughtered at the wrath of Anakin skywalker during his march on the Jedi temple… This makes Kelleran Beq’s position one of the darkest possible in the final days of the order. It’s extremely sad to think about.
After this we get Kelleran Beq’s second ever canon appearance in the Mandalorian, where he is the man who is given the crucial task of evacuating Grogu from the Jedi temple during Order 66. Given his job in training Jedi Padawans for their trials means he was probably training Grogu at the time of Order 66… Not a fun thing to imagine.
Either way, we see that he manages to get Grogu out of the temple and in the escape he strangely uses a blue and a green lightsaber. This is contrary to what we already know in canon, but there may very well be a reason for that explained later in the series. Finally, he gets to a group of allied naboo security forces and manages to get Get Grogu offworld, maybe to the planet Naboo…
