Chinese brand BYD burst onto the Australian car scene with three well-positioned fully electric vehicles, but its latest model, the Sealion 6 mid-size SUV, breaks from that tradition by being a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) instead. As such, it finds itself firmly in the sights of the best-selling Toyota RAV4 Hybrid as well as the Nissan X-Train e-Power and Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV.
So, what does the Sealion 6 bring to the party? Well, it comes armed with a pair of series-parallel powertrains, with the entry-level Dynamic pairing a 78kW/135Nm 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol four-cylinder engine with a 145kW/300Nm front-mounted electric motor for combined outputs of 160kW/300Nm, while the flagship Premium upgrades to a 96kW/220Nm turbocharged unit and adds a 120kW/250Nm rear-mounted electric motor for a total 238kW/550Nm. An 18.3kWh battery delivers up to 81km (Premium) or 92km (Dynamic) of electric-only driving range.
