3ds Max Tutorials - ZDepth Pass (3ds Max to After Effects) - In this tutorial I show you how to create a zdepth pass in 3ds Max, how to render your different passes to a single exr file using the vray renderer. Then I explain how to extract the zdepth pass in After Effects with the EXtractoR effect and how to adjust the DOF in After Effects using the Camera Lens Blur effect. A zdepth or z-depth pass stores the depth information in your scene. You can then use this data within After Effects to add depth of field or DOF. This can then be adjusted within After Effects using the Lens Blur effect.
It's always better to render a zdepth pass rather than rendering depth of field (DOF) in your 3d software like 3ds Max because this will give you the ability to adjust your depth of field when doing compositing and no need to re-render your 3d scene if you need to change your DOF.
