All too often, I read about sensitivity after a new filling is placed. Here, I explain the procedure of what dentists do during a resin filling and what could possibly have caused your sensitivity. Although fillings are basic dentistry, there is more science happening behind the scenes than you may realize. Like a chain link, the integrity, strength, and design are only as strong as the weakest link. Knowledge, care, and flawless execution are critical to minimize the chance of complication.

I want to be clear that sensitivity after any filling is normal up to a point. I tell my patients to give it 2 weeks. During that time, the sensitivity should taper off. If it stays the same or gets worse, then we need to investigate.

I regularly recommend Sensodyne toothpaste to help reduce sensitivity. It is not a cure, and not applicable to all situations, but it does help tremendously.
