Kamakshi Sahasranama is a unique text found in paper manuscript at the French Institute Pondicherry, who has been preserving the palm leaves and paper manuscripts by scanning them. The RE43333 paper manuscript has many sahasranama of Devi like Gayatri, Kalika, Bhavani etc. This Kamakshi Sahasranama is seen in the grantha lipi in that manuscript. The colophon describes that this is the fifth chapter of Srishti Samhita said to Brhgu by Lord Brahma. The deity said is the two-handed Golden image of Devi Kamakshi who is HER reflection. Kamakshi Vilasa seen in Markandeya purana also describes the emerging of Devi Kamakshi from the Bila – a cave like structure – which is at present under the mula sthana of Kamakshi temple to destroy the asura called Bandhaka. Later, a golden image of HER emerged from her third eye as HER Utsav Vigraha. This Devi was called Bangaru Kamakshi- Bangaru in the Telugu dialect will mean gold. SHE is now in Tanjore. The greatness of Bila, the different festivals which are celebrated are all piously documented in this Shasranama. The various weapons and vehicles along with the various sins which are destroyed by just worshipping HER mentally is exhalated in these names. The Gayatri akhsara are also said in a coded manner in the end. Though, we find 932 names only, here Sahasra will mean multitude not a thousand.
All these are joyfully offered at the Divine feet of Sri Devi Kamakshi.
Chanting/ listening to these holy names of Kamakshi twice daily is believed to bring auspiciousness and prosperity.
She is the embodiment of IchchA Shakti, GnAna Shakti and KriyA Shakti.
The monumental work of transliteration from Grantha lipi has been done by Smt.Geetha Devi and Kutticad Sri Ramesh Namboodiri - Yogamba sametha Atmanandanatha.
