One of the most brutal moments in English History saw the remains of the former Lord Protector Oliver Cromwell dug up from Westminster Abbey. Cromwell had seen dead years, but he was subjected to a posthumous execution and the remains of him were taken to Tyburn where they were hanged in chains. He was to be hanged, drawn and quartered which was the standard sentence for a traitor, and it was alleged that it took 8 swings of the axe to take his head from his decaying body.

But Cromwell was seen as a man who was instrumental in the execution of the English King Charles I. But when his son Charles II came onto the throne and the monarchy was restored, the King sought to punish those men who defeated his father in the English Civil War, and were behind his brutal execution. Cromwell's remains were subjected to a horrific desecration.
