APOLLO 2023 IN REVIEW ⏮️

Performance of American composer Aaron Copland’s Two Pieces for String Quartet at Midtown Arts and Theater Center Houston (MATCH), as part of our season opening concert #banned. The ending of the first movement features the viola with the main melody, expressed beautifully by our new violist Aria Cheregosha, in one of her first performances with Apollo.
The somewhat mournful but noble “Lento molto,” which Copland dedicated to fellow composer Roy Harris, signals a move more in the direction of greater simplicity, including the use of triadic harmonies. Copland’s former teacher Nadia Boulanger, in fact, called the work “a masterpiece—so moving, so deep, so simple.”
Boulanger’s admiration of the “Lento Molto” hardly surprises given, among other things, that the music epitomizes that “long line” in music, that constituted one of her main aesthetic precepts; the movement slowly and consistently unfolds the very opening motive. This work holds a special place in our concert repertoire as the only mature music for string quartet written by this important American composer.
