This barber chair has quite the story. It started at a barber shop in Bel Air Maryland until the barber retired. It was sold to someone that stored it in their house until the guy I knew purchased it. Now it's at the building in my office. Follow along as I unload this from the truck and give a brief tour of the 1920's era Koken barber chair. #koken #barber The Koken Barber Chair is an iconic piece of furniture that has become synonymous with the barbering profession. Developed and manufactured by the Ernest Koken Company, which was founded by Ernest Koken in St. Louis, Missouri, the Koken Barber Chair set the standard for comfort, functionality, and style in barbershops during the 1920s. During the 1920s, barbering underwent significant changes. The demand for skilled barbers increased, and the profession became more specialized. To accommodate these changes, barber chairs needed to be more than just a seat for customers; they needed to provide convenience and comfort for both the barber and the client. The Koken Barber Chair of the 1920s was designed with careful attention to detail. It featured a hydraulic lift system that allowed the barber to adjust the height of the chair easily. This feature was especially important because it enabled the barber to position the client at the ideal height for performing various grooming tasks. One of the key distinguishing features of the Koken Barber Chair was its reclining mechanism. The chair could be tilted backward, allowing the barber to wash the client's hair or perform other tasks that required the client to be in a reclined position. This mechanism was operated by a foot pedal or lever, which made it convenient for the barber to adjust the chair's position without interrupting the grooming process. In terms of comfort, the Koken Barber Chair featured plush upholstery, typically made of leather or vinyl, which provided a luxurious seating experience for the client. The chair often had padded armrests and a headrest to further enhance comfort during longer grooming sessions. Some models even had built-in footrests for additional relaxation. From a design perspective, Koken Barber Chairs were known for their elegance and craftsmanship. They featured intricate metalwork, often made of cast iron, with ornate detailing and decorative elements. The chairs were available in various styles, including Art Deco and Victorian-inspired designs, catering to different aesthetic preferences. The Koken Barber Chair quickly gained a reputation for its durability and quality, making it a favorite among barbers and shop owners. It became a symbol of professionalism and prestige, and many barbershops proudly displayed the Koken Barber Chair as a centerpiece in their establishments. Today, original Koken Barber Chairs from the 1920s are highly sought after by collectors and vintage enthusiasts. They are considered valuable antiques that represent a bygone era of traditional barbering. While Koken Barber Chairs have evolved over time with modern advancements, the legacy of the 1920s models continues to influence the design and functionality of barber chairs to this day.
