She's Not There was the debut single from The Zombies, written by keyboardist Rod Argent and recorded for Decca Records on June 22nd, 1964. The song was included on their debut album release in December of that year following its smash popularity. The Zombies initially formed in 1961 by Rod Argent, Paul Atkinson and Hugh Grundy. Frontman vocalist, Colin Blunstone, and Paul Arnold would soon join to complete the band's lineup before the band's original name, The Mustangs, was dropped in favour of The Zombies. Bassist Paul Arnold decided to leave the band for an educational pursuit and was replaced by Chris White. The Zombies won a band competition and landed a recording contract with Decca. They recorded 4 songs at a session for Decca on June 22nd, including the Argent-penned She's Not There. Decca released She's Not There backed with Make Me Feel So Good as the debut 45 single from The Zombies. The song was first released in England by Decca on July 24, 1964. The song's popularity quickly grew and even found its way across the Atlantic Ocean to the North American market. It was released in October on the Parrot label in both Canada and the USA, peaking at the #2 position on the Billboard Hot 100 by December, the same month The Zombies' debut album was released. This particular record is an original promotional 45 of the 1964 Canadian release on Parrot Records, for demonstration only. (Seems fitting, I guess, to demonstrate it playing on my turntable for you to enjoy on my YouTube channel.) In 2016, She's Not There by The Zombies was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame. Well, no one told me about her, how many people cried. But it's too late to say you're sorry. How would I know, why should I care? Please don't bother tryin' to find her, She's not there. Well, let me tell you 'bout the way she looked, The way she'd act and the colour of her hair. Her voice was soft and cool. Her eyes were clear and bright, But she's not there. Well, no one told me about her, what could I do? Well, no one told me about her, though they all knew. But it's too late to say you're sorry. How would I know, why should I care? Please don't bother tryin' to find her, She's not there.
