Why has Nintendo chosen to close the 3DS and Wii U eShops? The simple answer is money. The more complicated answer has to do with decisions Nintendo has made to design their online stores around obsolescence, and replacing everything as soon as possible after a console generation ends.

(Which, in fairness, is also all to do with money.)

The death of the 3DS and Wii U eShops marks the end of an era for two beloved Nintendo platforms, although admittedly one was more widely beloved than the other. Our Wii U originally didn't get a lot of play, but as our daughter got older, it came into its own as an excellent family console. We've ended up picking up most of the big hitters from the Wii U's back catalogue over the past few years, mostly from eBay, and it turns out, this thing was pretty great!

We appreciated the 3DS more during its tenure as Nintendo's primary handheld console, and it has a lot of stellar games that it's sad to see go. Mosty notably, the 3DS and the Wii U are the only remaining platforms for purchasing Virtual Console Nintendo titles, including DS games which aren't even available on Nintendo Switch Online. Indeed, once the ability to buy games for the dual-screened consoles disappears, there's a good chance it'll be a while before Nintendo bothers to retool its DS, 3DS, and Wii U games for  future platforms. Single screens appear to be where the company is headed.

Here's hoping the fantastic eShop games that are about to be lost will at least be available in some form again in the future.

Lots of love,
