A mosque, a masjid (Arabic for a place of worship) is a place where Muslims pray and worship. Friday and holiday prayers are held in mosques. The first mosque was built by Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) in Medina. Mosques were built first in cities, then in villages and neighborhoods. The network of mosques on the side facing Mecca (qibla) has an altar, a pool in the courtyard, and one or more minarets.
