I recently bagged a real
I recently bagged a real bargain on eBay and bought an Orbital Dual Action Sander / Polisher for £20, but the backing plate had seen better days and needs to be replaced.
As I could't source an OEM replacement, I decided on a DIY backing pad renovation.
I sourced a self adhesive wide enough Hook and Loop (Velcro) sheet and after a short prep of the existing surface, I stuck it on and hey presto, it's ready for new polishing pads.
It was a quick fix, and much cheaper than the compatible branded Backing Plate that I found, and it's done the job perfectly fine too.
I am not a professional detailer, an enthusiast at best, so I didn't want to spend a fortune on a high-end machine. This Clarke unit has performed very well. I bought some decent cutting compound, glaze and wax to see what's what.
The results have been truly amazing so far.
The great news was that a nationwide UK car accessories retailer (Halfords) sells the correct size application pads for this size machine and they actually had an offer on a few of the different grade pads, so I've also managed to get myself a few pads for different application.
Roll on sunny season detailing sessions.
