High blood pressure or hypertension during pregnancy is a big deal, and can lead to pretty negative health outcomes for both mama and baby. A study presented at the American Society of Nutrition conference by Liping Lu from Ball State University reported that in the 3 months before pregnancy, women with the highest calcium intake compared to lowest had a 24% lower risk of hypertension disorders of pregnancy. They also found that women who reported consuming the highest amount of dairy products had a 23% lower hypertension risk compared to the lowest dairy consumers. While these are associations, this does suggest that focusing on a high quality diet with adequate calcium before getting pregnant may be important, so if you’re planning pregnancy keep this in mind, talk to your doctor, and consider focusing on incorporating dairy or supplements if your intake is low. That’s what science tastes like.
