Do you think that achieving your goals for fame and riches will make you happy and fulfilled? If so, you might be surprised to learn that that desire for money and things is not what you really want. In fact, it might be the very thing that is preventing you from living a meaningful and authentic life.
One of the main themes of Watts’ teachings is that we are living in an illusion of time, in which we are always projecting ourselves into the future or dwelling on the past. We think that by achieving certain goals, we will be happy and satisfied. But this is a trap, because as soon as we reach one goal, we set another one, and the cycle continues. We are never content with what we have, and we are always anxious about what we don’t have.
Watts argues that this way of living is absurd and self-defeating. He says that the meaning of life is just to be alive, and that living in the present is the only thing that makes sense. He says that by being fully aware of the here and now, we can experience the wonder and beauty of existence, and appreciate the simple joys of life.

Watts also suggests that by listening to ourselves, we can discover our true nature and purpose. He says that we are not separate from the universe, but expressions of it. He says that we are not here to achieve anything, but to play and enjoy the game of life. He says that by living for ourselves, we are not being selfish, but authentic. And by being authentic, we can also live for other people, because we can connect with them on a deeper level.

Sound and reality are intimately connected, according to Alan Watts. He believed that sound is not just a way of communicating or expressing ourselves, but also a way of perceiving and creating reality. He said that sound is a form of vibration, and vibration is the essence of everything that exists. He said that we are constantly surrounded by sounds, both audible and inaudible, that shape our experience of the world and ourselves.
Watts also argued that sound is a powerful tool for awakening our awareness and expanding our consciousness. He said that by listening to the sounds of nature, music, or silence, we can tune into the harmony and rhythm of the universe, and discover our true nature and purpose. He said that by using sound as a meditation, we can quiet our restless minds and access a deeper level of reality, beyond words and concepts.

Another aspect of Alan Watts’ philosophy that relates to the self is his view on time. Watts argued that time is not a linear and objective dimension, but a subjective and relative experience. He said that time is a way of measuring change, and that change is a way of perceiving difference. He said that we create the illusion of time by dividing reality into past, present, and future, and by identifying ourselves with our memories and expectations. He said that this illusion causes us to suffer from anxiety, regret, boredom, and fear.

Watts proposed that we can free ourselves from the tyranny of time by realizing that we are not separate from the present moment, but part of it. He said that the present moment is the only reality, and that it contains everything that ever was and ever will be. He said that by living in the present, we can experience the eternal now, which is the source of joy and creativity. He said that by being aware of the present, we can also transcend our ego, and see ourselves as expressions of the whole process of reality.

Watts also suggested that we can play with time, and use it as a tool for exploration and discovery. He said that we can alter our perception of time by changing our perspective, our attention, or our state of consciousness. He said that we can experience different modes of time, such as circular time, cyclical time, or timeless time. He said that we can also create our own time, by choosing how we want to spend it, and by making it meaningful and enjoyable.
