In today's video I show how a ship is maneuvered in the port channel, I spent an afternoon following the work of the pilots in the port of Itajaí and Navegantes.

PILOTAGE: The pilot is called by the Pilotage Operations Center one hour before the ship's arrival at the bar. Upon arriving at the boarding bridge, the pilot puts on the life jacket and gloves and waits for the ship to approach at two miles (about 3,600 m). He boards the speedboat and goes against the vessel.
To board the pilot, the speedboat master approaches the ship's ladder and, in a precise act, the pilot holds the rope firmly and climbs towards the ship's officers. Incredible as it may seem, this is one of the most critical moments in the pilot's work. Any slip or stumble can cause an accident, at least a fall into the sea.

Everything going perfectly, the pilot goes to the command room where the captain is. From that moment on, the ship is handed over to the pilot. All the movements he will make until docking are defined by the pilot. If the commander wants to, for obvious reasons of hierarchy, he can disagree with the pilot. But, this is a rare situation to happen. It is important that there is no personal bond between the pilot and the ship's captain, respect and cordiality being above all.

A ship maneuver is an exercise in intelligence and experience. According to him, the Brazilian pilot must always be connected to the reaction of nature, in order to be able to decide the most adequate maneuver for that particular condition.
