Ipoh white coffee is a specialty coffee often considered one of the best coffees in Asia (Lonely Planet's coffee guide ranked Ipoh as one of the 3 best coffee cities in Asia). For all of you planning to visit Malaysia in 2020: you don't want to miss Ipoh's signature specialty coffee while you're travelling in Malaysia! While there are many shops in Ipoh where you can try its famous white coffee, we went to the source: Learn how to make coffee from Tan Boonkeong, a 3rd-generation coffee expert in Ipoh - from growing a unique variety of coffee beans at his Yee Kong Coffee Plantation to coffee roasting in the factory, you can watch the whole Ipoh/Oldtown white coffee making process... and hear about why Mr. Tan feels he has a family legacy to carry on.
Mr. Tan's business, Yee Kong, was originally founded by a man named Cheow in the 1940s - who later recruited Tan Jinnam (Boonkeong's grandpa) as his apprentice. Since then, it has passed on through the Tan family through the generations, and they are determined to continue the legacy for generations to come. They now produce both white and black coffee, with various types of Arabica and Liberica bean. They now export coffee to other parts of Southeast Asia, to China, and even to North America.
