Briefing by Mr. Nickolay Mladenov, Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process, on the situation in the Middle East, including the Palestinian question, during the 8690th meeting of the Security Council.

Nickolay Mladenov, the Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process, told the Security Council he is “greatly concerned by the persistent lack of progress towards ending the occupation and realizing a negotiated two-State solution.”

Mladenov was briefing the Security Council on Wednesday (18 Dec) on the implementation of Security Council resolution 2334 from December 2016, which condemned Israeli settlements in the Occupied Palestinian Territory and demanded that Israel “immediately and completely cease all settlement activities in the occupied Palestinian territory, including East Jerusalem.”

“In the three years since Security Council resolution 2334 was adopted, plans for over 22,000 units have been advanced or approved in West Bank settlements, including in East Jerusalem. Tenders for some 8,000 units have been issued,” said Mladenov. “These numbers should be of serious concern to all those who continue to support the establishment of an independent and viable Palestinian state alongside Israel,” warned Mladenov.

The Special Coordinator also said “the continued demolitions and seizures of Palestinian structures, including internationally funded humanitarian projects, is also of significant concern. This practice is not in line with international humanitarian law and must stop. Affected populations must be duly compensated for damages incurred. Similarly, the high number of Palestinian households in East Jerusalem with eviction cases filed against them is alarming. Israel, as an occupying power, must abide by its obligations under international humanitarian law.”

Also speaking at the Council, Permanent Observer of the State of Palestine to the United Nations Riyad Manour implored the international community to “demonstrate that the international will to achieve peace is stronger than the Israeli will to colonize Palestinian land.”

“We call on the Council and all States to act now to advance accountability and justice, freedom and peace, for the sake of the Palestinian people, the Israeli people, and future generations, for the sake of regional and global peace and security and the international rules-based order,” said Mansour.

Israeli Ambassador to the UN, Danny Donan, used his speech to once again condemn Iran over its “expansionist ambitions.”

Danon said “wherever the Iran regime’s tentacles can reach, civilians suffer. The Islamic Republic the biggest threat to security and stability in the region. Yet, still, many members of this esteem Council and international community try and appease the regime. For years, Israel has warned that regime’s nuclear and expansionist ambitions are a threat to entire world.”
