The January 27, 1978 performance
The January 27, 1978 performance at the Nakajima Sports Center in Sapporo cast a dark shadow over Japanese music history. About 5,000 people were packed into the venue, and as soon as the show started, fans rushed to the front of the stage, causing a Japanese chessboard topple over, killing a female college student who was pinned under the stage.
In fact, the band did not receive a call from the police to cancel the show, and the audience lights were turned on, but the performance resumed with the lights intact. It was only after the concert that the band members learned of the accident. The management staff announced to the audience during "Man On The Silver Mountain" that the show could not continue if there was such a commotion, and asked the audience to remain calm. Then, as if to cool down the whole audience, Ritchie played a classical piece and led the audience to "Catch The Rainbow. Then came "Starstruck," "Night People," and finally a rare reprise of "Man On The Silver Mountain.
For the encore, Richie played a guitar intro in a serious mood to calm the audience's enthusiasm. The show ended with "Do You Close Your Eyes," a wild explosion of Richie and the band's playing.
It was customary at the time for people to leave their seats and rush to the front when the show started, but from this point on, rock concerts were strictly guarded. (It is said that the sound recording process intentionally cut out the audience's voices that suggested an accident that occurred during the show.)
