In this chapter Stradlater comes home from his date, and barges into the room. He reads Holden’s composition and becomes angry, stating that it has nothing to do with the assignment, and that it is no wonder that Holden has been expelled. Holden tears up the composition, and angrily throws it away. Holden decides to spoke in the room to annoy Stradlater. The tension increases in the room when Holden asks about Stradlater’s date. He refuses to tell the details. Holden attacks him, assuming the worse, but Stradlater pins him to the floor and tries to calm him down. Holden insults Stradlater driving him crazy until he punches Holden in the face and bloodies his nose. Stradlater then becomes worried that he has hurt Holden, but Holden continues to insult him and eventually leaves the room.
