This lower control arm and
This lower control arm and ball joint replacement video was performed on a 2002 Toyota Avalon. The customer had been complaining of steering wonder during acceleration and braking and a clunking noise when turning into his driveway. These symptoms are typical with worn or broken control arm bushings and ball joints. The lower control arm and ball joint design between different models are virtually identical with minor differences. Most of the parts are interchangeable with Toyota's Sienna and Solara while the ball joints may be used with the the ES300, Camry and RX300.

From past experience, I've found it easier and faster to replace the control arm with the attached ball joint by removing the steering knuckle in lieu of keeping it attached to suspension strut, cv axle and tie rod. The cotter pin for the ball joint nut may be difficult to remove as well as the ball joint nut. The cv axle interferes with positioning a box wrench on the nut. A open end wrench might get it off but there's a good chance that it will slip off. If you want to vibrate off the ball joint from the steering knuckle with a hammer, you may first have to remove the brake caliper and rotor; otherwise, you'll need to use a ball joint separator tool.
No special tools are needed outside of standard metric wrenches and sockets but you will need a 30 mm socket to remove the axle shaft nut that you can rent from your local auto parts store along with a torque wrench.

Control Arm Bolts: 152
Ball Joint to Control Arm Bolts 94
Ball Joint to Steering Knuckle 83
Strut to Knuckle Pinch Bolts 152 - 166
Brake Caliper Bolts 65 - 70
Axle Spindle Nut 217
