Welcome to the final episode of our nine-part Oman series, covering our 1 month 4x4 camping road trip around Oman in February and March 2022.

We wake up in the Rub al Khali desert (The Empty Quarter), pretty much as far south as we could get in Oman and set off for the 1000 km drive north to the Sayq (Saiq) Plateau in the Al Hajar Mountains. We arrive at sunset and set up camp close to the luxurious Alila Jabal Akhdar resort (with similar spectacular views but a £0 price tag!).

We spend the following day walking the short Mirage in the Mountains trail, exploring the abandoned village of Wadi Bani Habib, and visiting the tiny cliffside village-turned-guesthouse of Al Sugra (The Suwgra / Al Suwjara / Al Sogara). This 500 year old village is found in a seemingly impossible location, tucked into a cliff face, camouflaged against the rock and accessible only on foot. The village was once home to five families from one family group, but after water pipes, a road, and electricity arrived nearby, they all moved to more modern houses on the opposite side of the wadi. Instead of allowing the old houses to go to ruin, some younger members of the family decided to turn the village into a guesthouse. We spend a second night camping in the Jebel Akhdar region, at a glorious mountaintop spot overlooking Wadi Bani Kharus, before descending to the old mudbrick village of Birkat Al Mawz and on to Wadi Al Abyadh for our final night in Oman.
